VIDEO: Master Class Jazz Performance at Maple Dale

Internationally acclaimed jazz pianist David Hazeltine visited Maple Dale Friday and performed a few numbers with Maple Dale jazz teacher, Jamie Breiwick - giving students a little taste of the professional jazz world.

Students at Maple Dale Middle School were visited by internationally acclaimed jazz pianist David Hazeltine and his trio, who performed a few numbers with the student's jazz teacher, Jamie Breiwick Friday.  Hazeltine began his jazz career in Milwaukee at just 13 years old, playing at the Milwaukee Jazz Gallery and working with artists like Charles McPherson, Eddie Harris, Sonny Stitt, Pepper Adams and Chet Baker. Friday, he was accompanied by Jeff Hamann on bass, Brian Ritter on the drums and Breiwick on the trumpet.  "David Hazeltine is for sure the brightest star on the jazz piano horizon," said jazz legend Cedar Walton in a press release. Whiz Kids: Maple Dale Eighth-Grade Jazz Students

These kids are so driven by their music, they give up their mornings, lunch times, recess and evenings to practice. Do you know an exceptional child or teenager? Nominate them in the comment box below!

Here at Fox Point-Bayside Patch, we like to celebrate the accomplishments of our local children and teens. We seek suggestions from readers for individual kids, youth groups, teens, and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments. This week, we're showing off the eighth-grade Jazz students at Maple Dale Middle School, nominated by their teacher, Jamie Breiwick (JB). The students got a special recording session and Breiwick said these kids are so determined, they give up nearly all their free time to practice.  Patch: Why did these kids get a special recording session? JB: We went into the studio to record a demo for the purpose of getting the students potential gigs... but also for the experience of working in the environment …

Whiz Kids of the Week: Maple Dale Jazz Ensemble

These students practice day and night, and even during recess.

Jazz Ensemble Students, ages 12-13 years old Maple Dale Middle School Accomplishment: These students participated in the Bob Kames Jazz Festival, earning second place and receiving a "superior" rating. A judge at the festival commented on their performance on a rating sheet saying, "Nice job - especially nice individual sounds!" The festival allowed them to attend master classes, clinic sessions with area jazz artists, and they even had a chance to attend a session with world renowned jazz trumpeter, Jan Faddis.  Key to Awesomeness: These students have a very strong edication and commitment to music, and jazz in general. Jamie Breiwick, director of bands at Maple Dale School says that the students make music a major priority in their lives…
