Menorah Parade Meanders Through North Shore

Dozens of cars topped with menorahs made their way through the North Shore in a parade in celebration of Chanukah.

More than 80 cars made their way through multiple North Shore towns Sunday in a Chanukah parade that made its way across the North Shore and down to the East Side of Milwaukee.  The parade began with a public menorah lighting at Pick 'n Save in Glendale. The group met with the Chabad of Mequon at the Metro Market in Mequon, then joined the Milwaukee group and continued along Lake Drive south to the East Side of Milwaukee along Farwell and Prospect Avenues, Wisconsin and Cass Streets, Michigan Street and on to Lincoln Memorial Drive. The parade concluded at Bayshore Mall. For other holiday news, tips, recipes and more, check out the Patch Holiday Guide. Local Fire Department and Synagogues Pairing Up for Passover Tradition

For safety and community connections, the North Shore Fire Department is hosting an official chametz burning – the removal by fire of all leavened bread – in honor of Passover.

Milwaukee River Pkwy. "The goal of the Fire Department is to be in touch with who we're serving, and if we don't understand who we're serving, I don't think we're doing our job 100 percent," Capt. John Maydak said.  Rabbi Wes Kalmar of Congregation Anshe Sfard …

The truth is that at this time of year, there is a strong Jewish custom to donate large amounts of money (called Maot Chittin - 'money for wheat') to the poor so that they can afford the extra cost of the Passover holiday. There are also food donation sites throughout the congregations and institutions of the Jewish community at this time of year so a ton of food does …   more ›

Jewish Santa Crosses the Cultural Divide

Spending Christmas Eve with the less fortunate gives Bayside man and his family a new perspective.

"There's nothing like being Santa Claus in full Santa Claus garb, driving down the highway and having cars pulling up next to you just looking," Mark Shapiro said. For the third year in a row, Mark, executive director of the Jewish Community Center, will dress up as Santa and deliver hundreds of toys the Shapiro family have collected throughout the year to children at the Cathedral Center, an Milwaukee emergency shelter for women and families. In 2010, the shelter served 934 families, which includes 273 children. Those families make the shelter their home for the night, receive a hot meal, and then go back out on the streets the following day. "On Christmas Eve, we're not really dropping off needs, we're dropping off wants," Mark explained…
