Photo: Maple Dale Student Gets Ride Home with River Hills Police

No, he wasn't getting arrested. This sixth-grader's family bid the highest at the MDIH Bash for one of the top prizes, a ride home with a police officer.

"Are you Luke Hansen?" River Hills Sgt. Michael Gaynor asked. All the other students in the classroom parted like the Red Sea, and Luke came to the door with a big smile on his face.  No, Luke was not being arrested — this middle school student was getting special treatment with a ride home in a police car, along with his sister, Abby. His  family bid the highest at the MDIH Bash for one of the top prizes, winning the ride on the last day of school. After Gaynor offered to help them haul all their last-day-of-school items, they made their way to the police car. They each got to try on an official River Hills Police Department uniform shirt and check out the bullet proof vests. They also received a few police-issue mugs, pens and magnets.

As school district funding is slashed, money for everyday classroom supplies continually comes directly from teacher pockets. But in the Maple Dale-Indian Hill School District, parents are banding together for their largest fundraiser of the year, the MDIH Bash, which gives money back to teachers for classroom supplies, helps fund student field trips and more.  "The money goes directly to support our teachers, students and community," MDIH Foundation President Darren Fisher said. "But the bigger things is it’s a fundraiser for our parents to connect and get to meet the leadership in the school, other parents who are supporting the school, and just a night for adults to hang out and have a good time." But beyond an outlet for parents to …
