Extra officers will be on every highway and street all weekend, says Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke, and municipal police back that up.
The highways and byways of Milwaukee County will be crowded with traffic this long holiday weekend, and Sheriff David Clarke wants all drivers, those law-abiding and those not, to know law officers will be on the road with them – in numbers. With responsibilty for freeways, highways and parks, sheriff's deputies will be on heavy, highly visible patrol, Clarke said, along with local police and the State Patrol. In about a 12-hour time span, 32 cars crashed along the interstate. That's more than five times the normal daily average of freeway accidents.
Between 5 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday, there were 32 car accidents along the Milwaukee County freeway system. That's more than five times the normal daily average for freeway accidents according to a press release from the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office Monday. In the North Shore, there were two major accidents including: Out of the 32 accidents Monday, 17 were property damage only, 10 involved injuries and five did not involve any damage according to the release. Usually there are only an average of three to six accidents per day. The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office suggests allowing greater stopping distances and driving at reduced speed in reduced visibility situations like Monday's thick fog.

Suspect accused of pointing weapon at driver in a road rage incident on I-43.
An Indiana man is facing fines of up to $21,000 and just more two years in jail after being charged Friday for wielding a gun in a road rage incident that left a semi-truck driver in fear for his life. Mark I. Manning, 47 of Columbus, IN, was arrested Tuesday evening after the truck driver called 911 to report that Manning had aimed a gun at his vehicle while the two were driving on Interstate 43. According to criminal complaint filed in Milwaukee County Circuit Court: The truck driver told police a man had cut him off and applied his brakes. The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office will be patrolling for sex offenders not following the rules.
According to a press release from the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office: The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin Department of Corrections Probation and Parole, US Marshals Service and police departments in Milwaukee, West Allis, and West Milwaukee have partnered to ensure the safety of children as they go door to door through neighborhoods in Milwaukee County collecting Halloween treats. On Oct. 30, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., combined law enforcement teams will conduct “Knock and Talks” at residences of known sex offenders and serve warrants on sex offenders who have not registered with the Wisconsin Sex Offender Registry. When a sex offender is non-compliant, it means that the person has not completed all of the requirements for supervised release into a community. These offenses can be things like moving to a new residence without prior approval; purchasing, posessing or carrying firearms; or maintaining a relationship with any adult who has children under the age of 18. The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Department is asking for the public's help in finding Jermaine Edwards, 22, who escaped from court-ordered electronic monitoring by apparently cutting off his electronic bracelet. Edwards was convicted for the second time on possession of THC. He was sentenced to 15 months probation as long as he wore a GPS monitoring bracelet. Sheriff's crackdown on speeders results in nearly three times as many tickets as last year.
Labor Day means picnics with the family and a day off for most, but it also means a busy weekend for the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office. Overall traffic citations written by sheriff's deputies over the Labor Day weekend jumped by 80 percent over the same period last year. Speeding citations went up the most — leaping 170 percent, from 175 citations to 472. Fran McLaughlin, public information officer for agency, said the increase is a result of having more squads on patrol over the weekend, thanks in part to a federal grant. "The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office had speed grant money this year that we did not have last year," McLaughlin said. The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office increased its patrols during the Memorial Day weekend to ensure that the lakefront and parks were free from crime and disorder. According to a press release, five perpetrators were arrested and 59 were issued citations for various violations of the law. At the start of the Memorial Day weekend, Sheriff David Clarke gave clear a message, "Law violators are not welcome in these public spaces, and if their anti-social behavior continues, we will be more than happy to take them to jail and prosecute them." $12.5 million projects forces some temporary, single-lane closures.
The Department of Transportation has issued updates on the bridge constructions in Fox Point and Bayside that leaves numerous blaze orange cones scattered along the roadway and tends to slow traffic. Three bridges that cross Interstate 43 including Green Tree Road, Good Hope Road and Brown Deer Road, have been worked on since the beginning of April and according to a press release by the DOT, have cost $12.5 to update. The Good Hope and Brown Deer bridges have been completely replaced, totaling roughly 1,500 feet of reconstruction. The Green Tree bridge only required a new epoxy overlay. Milwaukee man faces up 11 years in prison and fines up to $37,600.
Lekennen T. Kirk has officially been charged in the hit-and-run crash from Sunday on I-43 by the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office. The 24-year-old Milwaukee man was driving northbound on I-43 while under the influence of alcohol and struck the rear of another vehicle. He abandoned his vehicle, fleeing the scene on foot, and attempted to get inside a van as it slowed to avoid hitting him, clinging to the luggage rack and breaking a window. Bayside, River Hills and the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office all worked together in apprehending the man.
