Nicolet Administration Considering Longer School Days, Shorter Classes

School Board will consider new program at tonight's 7 p.m. meeting.

The Nicolet School Board will take a look at a new program that proposes to extend the school day and shorten classes to accommodate a daily 40-minute resource time. More information on the program will be presented to the full School Board at tonight's 7 p.m. meeting in the Community Room. Nicolet's new curriculum and instruction adviser, Lisa Elliot, was met with opposition when students, teachers and parents questioned the benefit of that resource time at the January curriculum meeting. "Personally, I think it's absolutely ridiculous," Cullen Billhartz, a student at Nicolet said. "I believe it's going to hurt more people than it helps." To create this 40-minute block of time, Elliot proposed lengthening the school day by a total of 14 …

Fox Point, Bayside to Pay Larger Share of Nicolet Taxes

Dramatic shift is due to decline in property values in Glendale, which is paying less this year.

Last year, Glendale property owners paid $7.49 million in taxes to Nicolet — 46.2 percent of all taxes collected by the district. This year, Glendale property owners will pay $7.48 million, or 43.8 percent of the …

I hope the Fox Point residents who voted for the unnecessary $10.25 million Nicolet referendum are happy with their 11.5% school tax increase. As the Wisconsin Dept. of Public Instruction recently announced, 45 of the 50 school districts in southeast Wisconsin were able to LOWER their school taxes this year compared to Nicolet which had a 5.3% overall tax INCREASE, the highest of any other school…   more ›

Does AVID Program Have a Future at Nicolet?

Nicolet School Board members hope district can continue - and possibly expand - academic support program.

The $10 million referendum approved in April for Nicolet High School has alleviated some of the district's fiscal concerns, however, administrators and School Board members are still scrutinizing how money is being spent. And as they look at the numbers, board members say they are hopeful the Advancement Via Individual Determination program (AVID) can be preserved in this time of tight budgets. AVID serves 57 students by providing academic support, including tutoring, and helping them prepare for college. But the issue is always the money. Even with the referendum's passage, School Board President Marilyn Franklin reminded everyone at Monday's board meeting that it's not a free-for-all and the budget is still a balancing act. "One of the …
