Nicolet Students Putting Pen to Paper

Four student-athletes signed letters of intent Friday for St. Louis University, University of Iowa, University of Akron and McHenry College.

In front of around 60 friends, family, and coaches inside the D-Wing Library of Nicolet High School, four student-athletes signed their letters of intent Thursday. Chris Dempsey is Calli Head's diving coach and said she's a "great asset to the team." Gray had transferred into Nicolet before the 2011 season and made an immediate impact. Act 10 Saves Nicolet $418,000 in Benefit Costs

New report says the Nicolet Unified High School District has seen big savings from Act 10, as has Maple Dale-Indian Hill School District. However, Fox Point-Bayside didn't benefit nearly as much.

The controversial state law that eliminated most collective bargaining rights for school employees reduced benefit costs for Nicolet High School District by $418,000 last school year, according to a report released Monday. However, Fox Point-Bayside saw a $57,000 increase in benefit costs. The bulk of the savings for Nicolet came from reductions in the district's share of employee retirement costs, the report by the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance said. In the 2010-11 school year, Nicolet paid $567,629 toward the employee share of pension costs for workers; in 2011-12, that dropped to about $37,043, a 93.5 percent reduction, the report said. But the district paid 5.1 percent more in 2011-12 for health insurance costs for a total of $2.3 …

Jr. Knights Football Teaches Respect for the Game

Heavy recruiting by coaches lead to double the number of players this season.

With sports like soccer sweeping up North Shore kids, it's a tough sell to get high numbers out for football. But lately, kids are finding it just as easy to strap on a few more pads and grind it out between the hash marks. The Nicolet Jr. Knights are a fifth through eighth grade football program that has traditionally had lower turnout than football hotbeds like Mequon. “More than anything, it’s a numbers thing," Rick Lagerman, assistant fifth-grade coach said. Kids are still doing soccer and other things.” And while recruiting may be more suited at the college and university level, it proved very successful for the Jr. Knights. Going door-to-…
