Voters in several Patch communities chose both Republican and Democratic candidates, perhaps showing Congress that if residents can reach across party lines and focus on the issues, maybe our representatives should follow our example.
The last two years have been rough for Wisconsin voters. First we were caught up in recalls and then it was time for local school board and municipal elections. Eventually, we turned our attention to the upcoming state legislative and national races. Along the way, we were hammered with ad after ad of the candidates bashing each other and even here on Patch, readers were clearly divided and not shy about expressing their opinions. But come Election Day 2012, something kind of amazing happened in a handful of Patch communities: voters cast their ballots for candidates across party lines. In Patch's latest survey of political insiders, Democrats are riding a wave of confidence as Obama leads in polls. GOP insiders say that's a result of faulty national and swing state polling — and the "liberal" media.
Heading into the final weeks before the presidential election, it appears the Democrats are feeling better than Republicans when it comes to whose going to win in November — at least according to Patch latest survey of political insiders. However, many of the GOP insiders say that Democratic confidence is built on a foundation made of sand. For them, the latest national and swing state polls showing President Barack Obama with a widening lead over Republican Mitt Romney have been faulty at best. Wisconsin Republicans say that 5-4 ruling to upheld the federal Affordable Care Act will strengthen their resolve for to push for repeal, while Democrats praise the ruling.
In a highly anticipated ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court today upheld the Affordable Care Act, the health care reform law that President Barack Obama signed into law in 2010 and his top priority in the first two years of his administration. The high court, by a 5-4 vote, upheld the entire law. The controversial law — known as "Obamacare" to critics — expands health care coverage to millions of uninsured Americans. In Wisconsin, the reaction was divided along political lines. Republicans said the ruling would motivate them even more to push for the repeal of the law, while Democrats lauded the decision. Gov. President's actions on contraception controversy shows blatant disregard for our constitutionally protected freedom of religion.
When President Obama mandated that religiously-based organizations violate core tenets of their faith, Americans were rightly outraged. In response, the president announced an “accommodation” policy to these organizations, but the so-called compromise is not a compromise at all because it does not take away the mandate that infringes upon religious liberty. On Jan. 20, the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius, affirmed a rule that requires church-affiliated hospitals, agencies and universities to provide contraception and sterilization in the health insurance for their employees. In an alarming overstep of executive power, President Obama bypassed the constitutional nomination process and appointed a head to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, an agency created by the Dodd-Frank law, and three new members to the National Labor Relations Board. This decision is an unprecedented power grab that ignores the checks and balances written into our Constitution. This reflects a growing resolve within the Obama Administration to engage in “my way or the highway” gamesmanship with Congress. Last week, our national debt hit $15 trillion. The urgency of our debt crisis demands that Congress pass true spending reform that will enforce fiscal discipline. This can only be accomplished with a Balanced Budget Amendment. If we want to give job creators certainty for the future, and encourage them to expand and grow, we must rein in out-of-control spending. The House considered a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution, which requires a two-thirds vote in each chamber of Congress to pass. With opposition from the tax-and-spend left, the amendment did not pass. This Balanced Budget Amendment closely mirrors the same one that passed the House in 1995 — with broad bipartisan support — and failed by only one vote in the Senate. …

In February, the Obama Administration announced that it would no longer defend the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in federal courts. The Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage for federal purposes as solely between a man and a woman, was signed into law by President Clinton in 1996, after receiving strong bipartisan support from both houses of Congress. President Obama’s February announcement was delivered by Attorney General Eric Holder in a letter to Speaker John Boehner.
