After colliding with the truck at the Porticos Apartments, the driver narrowly missed a tree before police found her in the parking garage. The police report also says she admitted to drinking an entire bottle of vodka.
Colliding with a parked garbage truck at the Porticos Apartments became the least of concerns for a woman later cited for OWI and hit-and-run. Fox Point Police reports detail a Sept. 19 incident that began with a Veolia Environmental garbage truck driver traveling westbound on Bradley Road. He noticed a silver car begin backing up in front of the Porticos entrance. The truck driver came to a complete stop and honked several times, he told police, but the silver car backed up right into the garbage truck. The truck driver got out to go talk to the car driver, but the car sped off across the grass, nearly striking a tree by the entrance to the apartment complex, he told police. A 56-year-old Milwaukee woman put a lot of effort into convincing officers she was sober, but in the end, her dance moves gave her away. An Bayside police officer watching traffic noticed the woman make an illegal u-turn at Brown Deer and Port Washington Roads just before 1 a.m. on Aug. 13. However, when he tried to pull her over, she didn't stop immediately. He activated not only his lights, but his sirens before she noticed him and pulled over at West Brown Deer Road near Hawthorne Road. When the officer approached the vehicle, he could smell alcohol coming from her breath, according to the report. Sheriff's crackdown on speeders results in nearly three times as many tickets as last year.
Labor Day means picnics with the family and a day off for most, but it also means a busy weekend for the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office. Overall traffic citations written by sheriff's deputies over the Labor Day weekend jumped by 80 percent over the same period last year. Speeding citations went up the most — leaping 170 percent, from 175 citations to 472. Fran McLaughlin, public information officer for agency, said the increase is a result of having more squads on patrol over the weekend, thanks in part to a federal grant. "The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office had speed grant money this year that we did not have last year," McLaughlin said.
