Attention online shoppers: You might have to pony up more cash for those online shopping sprees, if federal sales tax legislation becomes law.
Online shoppers, who enjoyed avoiding paying sales tax for their out-of-state purchases, probably won't be happy if a bill pending in Congress becomes law. The Marketplace Fairness Act, which passed 69-27 in the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, allows states the authority, and option, of collecting taxes on Internet and catalog sales. The act does not create a new tax. But it does allow states the option of collecting the taxes, which they are already owed. However, the legislation does exempt small businesses that make less than $1 million from collecting the tax. U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) voted for the bill, but Sen. As part of a social studies course on the workings of government, U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson visited Bayside Middle School students on Thursday.
U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson gave Bayside Middle School eighth-grade students a civics lesson Thursday. The visit, held in the middle school cafeteria, was part of a social studies lesson on how local, state and federal governments works. Before taking a trip to Washington D.C. where they met with U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan in March, the students got a visit from U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore. Johnson spoke for roughly an hour about why he got into politics, how he sees his role as a congressman, among other topics, and took questions from students. "When you look back on this year, when you're older, I think you'll realize how amazing it was to get the exposure you were granted," Principal Don Galster told students.
But border security should be the priority, the Republican senator and Tea Party favorite said during an interview with Patch, adding immigration reform should be tackled in bite-sized pieces, not on a comprehensive basis.

Ron Johnson took issue with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s explanation of how she handled the attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi. None of the U.S. elected officials from Wisconsin particularly cared for the deal hammered out to avoid the "fiscal cliff" — and that includes those who voted for it.
The "fiscal cliff" was averted Tuesday when the U.S. House handily passed a bill approved a day earlier in the U.S. Senate that raised taxes on the wealthy and staved off a tax increase for the middle-class. The bill passed 257-167 in the House, a comfortable 40 votes more than what was needed to become law. Among the congressmen serving southeastern Wisconsin, U.S. Reps. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI 5th District) and Tom Petri (R-WI 6th District) voted "no" on the measure, while U.S. Reps. Paul Ryan (R- WI 1st District) and Gwen Moore (D- WI 4th District) cast "yes" votes. U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy (R-WI 7th District), who now serves the Hudson area, voted no. Wisconsin senator endorses GOP frontrunner Sunday morning, but he also teamed up with Congressman Ryan to play a joke on the former Massachusetts governor.
It's not a good sign when you're the leading candidate in the Republican presidential primary race and not a single person shows up to one of your campaign appearances. Luckily for Mitt Romney, Sunday was April Fools Day, and U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan and Sen. Ron Johnson were just having a little fun with him when they introduced him to an empty room at a campaign appearance in Wauwatosa on Sunday afternoon. While a packed dining hall of supporters waited upstairs at the Bluemound Gardens Restaurant, the two Wisconsin Republicans had prepared a nearly identical room decorated with campaign signs in a completely vacant downstairs room.
