Local experts weigh in on respecting the coyote in the Village of Bayside.

In the Village of Bayside, coyotes have always had a negative connotation. From eyeing citizens at night to attacking small dogs, one can see why coyotes might not have the same appeal majestic appeal as say deer. However, some local experts said there should be no need to fear coyotes.   Bayside Police Captain Scott McConnell has dealt with coyotes since he started working at the village 27 years ago. Within the ranks of the police department, he considers himself the “coyote person.” Over McConnell’s career at the police department, he has educated residents about coyotes such as telling residents not to leave their pets out overnight or even to leave steaks on the grill after a big cookout. What Schlitz's Nature-Watchers See This Spring

The snow on the ground is an easy sign that we're still waiting for it to feel like spring, but check out what Schlitz Audubon Nature Center staff are noticing.

Everyone knows spring has been slow to arrive this year—especially compared to the 70-degree temperatures from 2012—but Schlitz Audubon Nature Center's Don Quintenz has been paying extra close attention.  WUWM interviewed Quintenz about the delayed arrival of spring, and what he's observed.  He said the first robin he spotted this year was on March 8, and in 2012 the birds had been in town and singing several days before that. His first bluebird spotting was eight days later this year than last year.  And in the human realm, he said he planned to go cross-country skiing—something he'd never done before in late March. Coyote Chronicles: Fox Point, Bayside Residents Share Critter Tales

Co-existing with wild animals may seem like a quaint idea, but sometimes things can get challenging. A number of residents have seen coyotes in the area and report that they've lost pets.

Coyotes have been seen in a number of neighborhoods in Fox Point and Bayside, and some coyotes have been going after people’s pets. To address their concerns, residents are invited to an informational workshop on coyotes, which will be held at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 6 in the Bayside Middle School cafeteria, 601 E. Ellsworth Lane. But we wanted to see where this was taking place, how people were feeling about co-existing with coyotes and how many they had seen. Orionids Meteor Shower 2012 Peak: When to Watch in Fox Point, Bayside

Shooting stars will be flying early in the morning in the Fox Point and Bayside area. The Orionids meteor shower promises to be a show worth watching.

The offspring of Halley's Comet are about to put on quite a show in the skies of Fox Point and Bayside. Earth will pass through a stream of debris from Halley's Comet beginning Oct. 15, which will give us the benefit of the annual Orionids meteor shower — though you probably won't see much until a bit later. The best place to view the shower is near the northern end of Bayside near the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center or East near Doctors Park (far away from city lights). No viewing parties have been organized in the area, but if you plan to host one please add it to the Fox Point-Bayside Patch calendar.   The shower should be at its peak the night of Saturday, Oct. 20, until just before dawn on Oct. 21. Road Closures on Sunday Due to Lakefront Marathon

About 2,500 runners will hit the streets on Sunday for the 32nd annual Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon, and that means some area road closures, too. Plus, check out who's joining from Fox Point and Bayside. Good luck!

About 2,500 runners will hit the streets on Sunday for the 32nd annual Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon, and that means some area road closures, too.   The run starts at 7:30 a.m. at Grafton High School, 1950 Washington St. and snakes 26.41 miles south along Lake Michigan taking runners through a hefty chunk of Fox Point and Bayside, according to the event website. Specifically, the local roads impacted are North Port Washington Road from County Line to Fairy Chasm, down Lake Drive past the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, continuing along Lake Drive all the way to finish line at Veterans Park in Milwaukee. The race starts at 7:30 and closures will likely last two hours. Of the 2,500 runners, 33 are from the Fox Point and Bayside area. Here's …
