Building Fires in North Shore On Track to Set New Record

Fire Chief Robert Whitaker was unable to pinpoint a particular reason, but 2012 should have more building fires than any year in recent history.

Building fires in the North Shore Fire Department region are up dramatically from last year and are on pace to be the highest total in years. Fire officials haven't been able to pinpoint a common cause. They also say the building fires are not clustered in any one geographic area among their seven communities. "Nationally, some communities are seeing a rise in people starting houses on fire intentionally because they can't afford to keep them anymore and are trying to get rid of the property, but we haven't seen that," Fire Chief Robert Whitaker said.   The causes of the building fires are "all mixed up," Whitaker said. "Lightning strikes, and so on." Meanwhile, medical calls are down, and the department is still on pace to handle roughly …

Tough-Guy North Shore Firefighters Like Their Pink T-Shirts

The department members are wearing pink T-shirts throughout October and selling them to the general public to support the fight against breast cancer.

One of the first things you notice about North Shore Fire/Rescue Department Assistant Chief Andrew Harris is that he’s wearing a pink shirt underneath his uniform. “It’s not typically a color we wear,” said Harris, stating the obvious, and too shy to have his photo taken. In another room nearby, burly firefighters were making food and watching TV as they milled around the Brown Deer station. Yes, they were also pretty in pink. Yes, this is evidence: Real men do wear it. The firefighters have donned pink T-shirts for the past month to support National Breast Cancer Awareness month. They have swapped their traditional blue T-shirts for the pink. They wear them to calls, and out in the community, as part of their standard uniforms. They’ve …

Proposed NSFD Fee Schedule Rankles Fox Point Trustees

A village trustee says Fox Point is contributing more than it should to the shared fire department, and the board declined to approved the new proposed fee schedule, asking instead for re-examination and a sunset clause.

Editor's Note: This article has been updated to reflect a correction in the numbers for Fox Point's 2012 contributions.  While four of the seven communities served by the North Shore Fire Department have adopted freezing the fee contributions, Fox Point Village Board members are looking for relief and a three-year sunset clause on the new schedule. "Compared to the original formula, it seems Fox Point is giving up more than the other communities are," trustee F.R. Dengel said Tuesday. "It seems like we're being asked to pay for more than our fair share." Fox Point paid 10.38 percent ($1.2 million) of NSFD's costs in 2012; the proposed formula has the village paying 10.31 percent. Village President Michael West said the Village Board will …

Thanks for the comment, Adam. At this point, I'm not sure. They didn't discuss that in detail at the meeting. The majority of the conversation was spent deciding if a five or three-year sunset would be appropriate. However, I have asked to receive a copy of their formal letter they will send to the Fire board and that should outline their reasons. I'll be sure to post that information as soon as …   more ›

Rice Not Seeking Re-Election in 2012

North Shore supervisor files notice of non-candidacy.

Milwaukee County Supervisor Joseph Rice, who represents much of the North Shore, has announced that he will not run for re-election in 2012. “Serving the people of the 6th District has been an honor and privilege and I am grateful to the people I represented for putting their faith and confidence in me," Rice said in a press release. "However I never intended public service to be my career and look forward to seeking new challenges and a new path." This comes with little suprise after a vote in August reduced the size of the County Board from 19 to 18 — eliminating Rice's seat. His district includes all of Whitefish Bay, Fox Point, River Hills and Bayside, as well as parts of Glendale and Milwaukee. The plan will divvy up the existing …
