Security Upgrades Coming to Stormonth Elementary, Bayside Middle

Officials plan to lock entrances, require visitors to be buzzed in, and install video surveillance at two of the three district buildings.

Fox Point-Bayside school officials are eyeing security improvements at two of the district's three buildings.  Last month, the School Board voted to target funds at safety and security upgrades at Stormonth Elementary and Bayside Middle School, Fox Point NOW reports. Though there have been measures in place in the past, entrances at those facilities will now be locked and require school staff to buzz in visitors. Currently, the main entrance at Bayside Middle School is locked, but another entrance isn't. That entrance will be locked under the new changes.  Additionally, the district plans to purchase video communication systems, allowing staff to see who is requesting entry into the building. Staff members will be stationed at both …

Parents Urge FPBS School District to Install Buzz-in System at Schools

The front doors are unlocked and visitors need only to check in with a secretary. The shooting in Newtown, CT has district officials considering the expensive security measure.

Fox Point-Bayside parents and residents are urging the school district to improve safety, with some saying a buzz-in system is imperative at the local schools. “Although it’s not going to stop a mad man, there is no reason to have open doors for all to waltz in,” Melissa LeClaire wrote on Fox Point-Bayside Patch’s Facebook page. Superintendent Rachel Boechler told Patch that a buzz-in system is one enhanced security measure under consideration in the district after the Newtown, CT school tragedy. School officials are reviewing their security plan, which was updated in January. Boechler said Tuesday morning that officials were meeting today to review security; she did not have a cost estimate on a buzz-in system but said it would exceed $10…

Fox Point-Bayside Schools Consider Safety Measures in Wake of Newtown Shooting

A buzz-in system is among the ideas that parents suggested to district officials after Friday's mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school.

The Fox Point-Bayside School District advised teachers Monday not to make the Newtown, CT school shooting the subject of full classroom discussions, as part of the district’s desire to honor the fact that parents may choose to tell their children different things about the tragedy. In addition, the district is reviewing security measures, such as, most critically, whether to install a buzz-in system at the middle and elementary schools, said Superintendent Rachel Boechler. Local police agencies are also taking some action in the wake of the tragedy, which left 20 children dead. Fox Point and Bayside police officials said they are increasing their visibility and patrols around area schools, although both also stressed that it’s just a …

Fox Point-Bayside Patch Year in Review

The Best of Patch: September

A look back at the top headlines from Fox Point-Bayside Patch in 2011.

At year's end it's nice to take a look back at where you came, which offers a good look at where you're going. At Patch, September brought remembrance of the homeless, a very scary day for kids at Stormonth Elementary when a bank robber crashed his car near the south side of the playground, and a smoky haze left many questioning where the fire was, not expecting it to be all the way from Minnesota. Take a look at the most popular stories from September. Photos: Stritch Students Sleep Outside to Raise Homelessness Awareness The chill in the air did not dampen spirits of about 25 students who showed solidarity with people who are homeless by camping out in box shelters near Cardinal Stritch University's Auditorium. Participants also held a …

Jr. Knights Football Teaches Respect for the Game

Heavy recruiting by coaches lead to double the number of players this season.

With sports like soccer sweeping up North Shore kids, it's a tough sell to get high numbers out for football. But lately, kids are finding it just as easy to strap on a few more pads and grind it out between the hash marks. The Nicolet Jr. Knights are a fifth through eighth grade football program that has traditionally had lower turnout than football hotbeds like Mequon. “More than anything, it’s a numbers thing," Rick Lagerman, assistant fifth-grade coach said. "There are so many kids out there (in Mequon). Sometimes it’s a tough sell in the North Shore. Kids are still doing soccer and other things.” And while recruiting may be more suited at the college and university level, it proved very successful for the Jr. Knights. Going door-to-…
