The University School of Milwaukee claims a nonprofit group plans to open a new charter school in the area with a similar name, and has filed a lawsuit in federal court.
The University School of Milwaukee has filed a lawsuit in federal court against one of its own board members and a nonprofit company that plans to open a charter school in the area with a similar name. The suit claims The Universal Companies and, Ronn Johnson, the companies' executive vice president of education for the Mid-West Region, are infringing on University School's trademarked names, including USM, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Universal plans to open a charter school named Universal School of Milwaukee, using the shorthand name for the University School of Milwaukee, USM. The abbreviation is also on the school's logo. University School is seeking an injunction banning Universal's use of its chosen name and of USM…

Thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, 16-year-old Charlie Burton will attend the Final Four and NCAA championship game this weekend.
It’s been a tough 16 months for Charlie Burton. On Dec. 16, 2011, the 16-year-old from Fox Point was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive childhood bone cancer called Ewings Sarcoma. After undergoing 12 weeks of chemotherapy, a bone replacement surgery on his right arm, and another 22 weeks of chemotherapy, he is now finished with his treatments. He continues to undergo physical therapy on his arm and requires regular checkups at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. "Thinking back on it now, it’s a bad memory," said his mother, Carrie Burton. "He’s been doing really well since then, but he's not out of the woods yet. Hopefully things continue to go well for him." Life has been better for Charlie in recent months. The University School co-op girls’ hockey team lost to Hayward 6-2 in the semi-final game of the state tournament Friday afternoon. The loss ended the season for the Wildcats. The Wildcats gave up two power play goals and three short-handed goals in the contest. “Our specials teams were not special for us today,” mused Jason Woods, USM’s head coach. “Still this team of girls was special this season. We won twenty games, more than any other in USM co-op’s history. We started the season 1-4. There were lots of questions back then, but these girls answered them by winning the sectional and ending up in the semi-finals of the state tournament. That’s special. The Wildcats beat Nicolet and Brookfield Central their matches on Tuesday but dropped two close matches on Wednesday against Arrowhead and Divine Savior Holy Angels to finish in fourth place in the tournament.

Starting in the early 1800's, University School originally began as The German-English Academy (GEA). In 1917, GEA changed its name to University School.
