WIAA Track: North Shore Teams Take La Crosse By Storm

Deysha Smith-Jenkins led Dominican girls to fifth place in D2 finals, while Bay boys took seventh in the D1 competition.

North Shore track athletes took La Crosse by storm Saturday. The combination of Whitefish Bay, Nicolet, Shorewood and Dominican’s track teams did extremely well at the WIAA State Track Meet Friday and Saturday, earning a combined seven medals on a day that saw countless records fall. Whitefish Bay boys kicked things off when James Stecker took sixth in the 100 with a time of 11.06. The junior didn’t have much time to relax, though, as he quickly had to compete in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays. Apparently Stecker works just fine under a lot of pressure, as the Blue Dukes took first place in both events despite being seeded fourth in both. “That was kind of my goal coming in,” Stecker said of the three medals. “I knew our relays had a great …

Nicely written article. I am a Dominican alum(almost 20 years ago) and it is exciting to see how well the athletes have faired in the state. That Smith-Jenkins athlete is pretty amazing; she is also an all state athlete in basketball having helped lead her team to the WIAA semi finals this year! Congratulations to you all; your family and school communities should be proud. Thanks for being a …   more ›

WIAA State Tennis: Larsen Falls Short; Hwang Claims D2 Title

Whitefish Bay senior Jack Larsen's state run ends with a bout of cramps and Dan Niquet for the second straight year. University School's Andrew Hwang claims gold in Division 2.

It's hard to fault Jack Larsen for thinking 2011 was finally the year that he was going win the WIAA state tennis tournament. After two straight trips to the semifinals, Larsen had lost just five games in his three-match march through Friday’s competition.  But Larsen’s run came to an end Saturday morning, falling for the second straight year to Milwaukee Marquette sophomore Damon Niquet at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison. “I was feeling really confident and had the momentum on my side,” Larsen said.  “I was thinking today was my lucky day, but I guess not.” Last year Larsen was leading 6-4, 5-4 in his second set against Niquet, but was forced to injury default due to cramps. Playing a year later in even warmer conditions, Larsen got …

SportsEdge: The Week in Prep Sports

Brookfield Central Skins Game is played in shirts ... and hats and gloves and parkas and ...

SportsEdge sent intrepid videographer AJ Randall to the sloppy, cold and wet Wanaki Golf Course last week as the 22-team Brookfield Central Skins Game went off as planned. It's our Game of the Week. For the Lightning Round from a week thinned out by weather and spring break, check out Nicolet soccer, Tosa West soccer and softball and North Shore Conference golf at The Bog. Did you miss the earlier editions of SportsEdge? Find them here: April 12  April 19 HONOR ROLL The state girls soccer poll is lopsided, and the field tips heavily toward the North Shore Conference.
