The Wisconsin State Fair hit an attendance high that it hasn't surpassed in a decade. The first Sunday of the fair, Aug. 5, attendance hit 127,833 people — which is the highest single-day attendance in more than a decade, according to a press release from organizers. In all, 920,962 people visited the fair between Aug. 2 and Aug. 11, which is about 10,000 more people than last year. The Wisconsin State Fair begins Thursday, starting 11 days of activities at State Fair Park. Some new things are in store—including new youth admission policies—and old favorites continue to draw fairgoers.
From trying the newest food on a stick to the rides or visiting animals, everyone who goes to the Wisconsin State Fair seems to have their favorites. Last year's fair got extra attention for racially-charged violence, and this year organizers are taking steps to prepare for crowds that get out of hand. West Allis Now has a look at what that means, like a police command post, more cameras and the continued rule that no one under age 18 can be admitted after 5 p.m. without a parent or guardian. In an effort to boost slumping summer blood donations, BloodCenter of Wisconsin is offering Wisconsin State Fair tickets to blood donors through August 11. Donors will receive a free state fair ticket by giving blood at one of BloodCenter’s local donor centers: Donors are asked to mention “summer” when making their appointment by calling 1-877-BE-A-HERO or (414) 937-6199, or by entering “summer” into the comment box on the confirmation page during online registration. BloodCenter’s "Give Blood, Go Free" promotion is an effort to increase blood donations during busy summer months when donations dip because of summer travel and fewer school and community drives. BloodCenter must see at least 800 donors each day in order to meet the needs …

Several people were injured, including police officers. Governor Walker has ordered the Wisconsin State Patrol to provide additional assistance.
Mob-like fights broke out Aug. 4 at Wisconsin State Fair, where hundreds of youths attacked and injured many fairgoers, including police officers. At a press conference Friday, State Fair CEO Rick Frenette announced that all youths under 18 years old will need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to enter the fairgrounds after 5 p.m. Officials also said at the press conference that two of the seven injured officers were hospitalized. State Fair Police Chief Tom Struebing said the fights that started at around 7 p.m. in the midway involved black youths against other black youths. Witnesses have said the incidents were racially motivated, but officials could not verify that was case, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. …

Strongly disagree AJ!!!!! U can't have your crabby pants on at the fair. U have to have an "anything goes" attitude at the fair, just like summerfest. Expect to step in giant piles of poop, get beer spilled on you, and who can forget the foods on a stick?! U probably didn't get a chance to have deep-fried, Bacon wrapped tater tots.   more ›
