David Braeger Will Apply for Open School Board Seat

The Milwaukee-area financial sector CEO launched a recall effort against board members and has advocated against middle school schedule changes.

The parent who led a recall effort against three Fox Point-Bayside School Board members is now seeking an open seat on the board. Milwaukee-area financial sector CEO David Braeger announced Wednesday that he is seeking the board's appointment to the seat that will soon be left empty by School Board President Debbie Friberg. Braeger, a parent of two children, filed paperwork May 8 to launch recall efforts against Friberg, Vice President Tim Melchert and member Alice Lawton. He later dropped the recall effort because he did not want to damage the school district's reputation. Braeger said he believes he is well-suited for the position because he is willing to take risks, ask hard questions, hold regular meetings with residents and teachers …

Bayside Middle School Schedule May Be Adjusted

Some school officials want to return to the existing class schedule, but a decision will not be reached until May 30.

Some Fox Point-Bayside School Board members have come out against proposed schedule changes at Bayside Middle School that would reduce art, music and physical education classes in favor of more time for math and one-on-one mentoring. The board has spent the last several weeks debating the scheduling changes, which would give students the math skills to succeed on a new state test that will replace the WKCE next school year. Currently Fox Point-Bayside currently offers 43 minutes per day of math, which is less than what the Department of Public Instruction recommends.  The district would also add a 30-minute "flex period" as part of a government-mandated Response to Intervention program that provides one-on-one assistance to struggling …

To all, I appreciate your passion. As you know, I have been a very loud voice in the community. That being said, instead of wasting time and energy beating on those who have exited, let's spend our time planning for the future. We have a new Superintendent, an open board seat, 2 new board members that were instrumental in the potential of getting rid of the ridiculous curriculum, programming and …   more ›

Stormonth Principal Dan Westfahl Resigns

After three years as principal of Stormonth Elementary, Dan Westfahl is stepping down for "personal and professional reasons."

After three years as principal of Stormonth Elementary, Dan Westfahl is stepping down for "personal and professional reasons." The Fox Point-Bayside School Board officially accepted Westfahl's resignation Thursday night, after Superintendent Rachel Boechler was notified about it last week via a letter.  "I think Dan is the best principal I’ve worked with," Boechler told Patch Friday. "He is especially talented in literacy development and he will be a significant loss for the district." Westfahl, who began his career in education as a first-grade teacher at Marcy Elementary School in the Hamilton School District in 1993, couldn't be reached for comment Friday. Rose, that may very well be a good answer. What we need is to get Boechler out and get the new District Administrator in so we can start fresh and get a new energy. I will say, that would say a ton of money.   more ›

3 Emerge As Finalists for Fox Point-Bayside School Chief

The director of curriculum in Whitefish Bay Schools, a school superintendent in Walworth County, and the director of a career center in Illinois are invited back for a second round of interviews.

After six people were interviewed last weekend, Fox Point-Bayside school officials have whittled a pool of candidates for superintendent to three.   School Board President Debbie Friberg said the final candidates will be invited back for a second round of interviews Thursday through Saturday.  The district began its search for a new school chief following Superintendent Rachel Boechler's resignation in January. Parents, Teachers Scold Fox Point-Bayside School Officials Over Cuts

With the threat of a recall hanging over the heads of School Board members, school officials try to explain rationale for reductions to arts, music and other programs. But many teachers and parents weren't buying it.

Fox Point-Bayside School District officials saw a town hall meeting Monday night as a way to clear the air of misconceptions about proposed reductions in art, general music, technology and physical education programs. But after administrators spoke for 35 minutes on the reasons behind the move, many of the 100 or so parents and teachers still weren't satisfied, and several said the scheduling changes would reduce the overall quality of education offered by the district. Those at the meeting at Bayside Middle School also were concerned about the prospect of losing some quality teachers next year. The district has sent out 10 preliminary layoff notices to teacher, although school officials say that has little to do with the scheduling …

About 150 parents and teachers turned out Monday for a Fox Point-Bayside School Board meeting to voice opposition to proposed changes to arts, music physical education and technology programs as well as possible staff layoffs in the district.  The proposed changes for the 2013-14 school year would reduce fifth-and sixth-grade physical education class time by 17 percent; fifth-and sixth-grade art and general music programs by 38 percent; and technology class time by 38 percent, according to Superintendent Rachel Boechler.  Some Patch users echoed comments made at Monday night's meeting, while others said they felt they needed more information before drawing a conclusion.
