ReplyI wonder if the US Department of Education would interested to take a look into this. If they have over $400 million in surplus tuition dollars. If they have been keeping this for years. Is any of this Federal Student Aid dollars? I work with the student aid program and the department "frowns" on not using the aid that was given for its intended use. this $400+ million apparently wasn't needed for student education.

ReplyReiss. I didn't say the current state of the property wouldn't generate the needed tax dollars. I said that undeveloped farm land wouldn't have generated that amount. You are comparing apples and oranges. We'll have to agree to disagree that the development wouldn't have occured without being in the TIF. On another note the original closure date for the district was around 2020-22. It is now on schedule to close in 2015, five plus years early. This again was because of the success of the disctrict which is the responsibility of Sturtevant. Regarding the ambulance, perhaps you should be upset with the current board who to my understanding has budgeted a new ambulance for three years but argued about it. What happened to that money? Of course without having completed an audit in two years there is no way to know.

ReplyReiss your question is based on a misunderstanding of history on both your part and "this trustee." The land in question was undeveloped farm land when it became part of Sturtevant. Every building you see on it was built after the establishment of Sturtevant's TIF district. The development wouldn't have occurred otherwise. I can assure you that the property tax generated from farm land would not generate enough money to pay for an ambulance. If anything you should be happy that Mt. Pleasant will receive this land developed by the financial responsibility and stewardship of Sturtevant. Mt. Pleasant will benefit for years to come, once the TIF closes, from the time and money that Sturtevant invested to attract the development.
